RESUMO

Microplastics, capable of absorbing persistent organic compounds, heavy metals, and emerging pollutants, are of global concern due to their potential to alter the behavior and metabolism of biota. In Latin America, the Pacific Alliance, comprising Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Chile, stands out for its biological wealth and productive ecosystems, which account for 37% of the region's gross domestic product. The leaders of these countries expressed their concern about microplastic pollution and pledged to take joint action. We conducted an analysis of the scientific production of these countries and the collaborations of their researchers, focused on the period 2015-2023, using Scopus and SCImago. We observed that marine-coastal/wetland ecosystems are the most studied, with a focus on fish, and that Mexico leads in publications, followed by Colombia, Peru, and Chile. In addition, we note the absence of an inter-institutional group dedicated to microplastics research in these countries. We recommend promoting collaboration between academic institutions specialized in microplastic research and government agencies dedicated to the promotion of science and technology in the countries belonging to the Pacific Alliance.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Research is vital for evidence-based surgery. Understanding scientometric differences among surgical specialties has scope to inform discussions within and across surgical specialities to develop and maintain a culture of research productivity. This study aims to quantify Australian orthopaedic surgical academic productivity compared to the other specialties within the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons' (RACS). METHODS: A list of Australian surgeons registered with RACS was compiled using the "find a surgeon" function on the RACS Web site. This list was cross-referenced with the specialty databases on their respective websites. A name search of the SCOPUS database for each individual surgeon was performed. For each individual h-index, m-index, total active publishing years, total publications, and total citations were collected. RESULTS: Orthopaedic surgeons had the equal lowest h-index median 2 (interquartile range:3), the shortest duration involved in research median 5 years (14), produced the fewest articles median 2 (7) and attained the second lowest number of citations median 28 (116) of the Australian surgical specialties. When the 10 individuals with highest h-index are compared among specialties, orthopaedic surgeons rank second with a median of 37 (6.5). CONCLUSION: Our objective data provides a factual comparison and baseline assessment of one aspect of research productivity. It can challenge currently held perceptions of performance and can inform conversations about strategic development. We recommend this assessment to other international Colleges and Societies on regular basis. These accurate academic productivity metrics provide opportunity for developing and maintaining a culture of sustained, significant contribution to surgical research.

RESUMO

Background: A significant body of evidence on the role of TMS in neurology and psychiatry has emerged from Indian studies. Aims: We aimed to assess the existing and emerging trends of research on TMS as a diagnostic or therapeutic tool in India using bibliometric analysis. Results: A total of 146 publications, retrieved from various databases, were analyzed using Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer. We found a linear positive growth of publications in India in the field of TMS and neuropsychiatry, with about 3000 citations so far. The most researched diagnosis was schizophrenia. NIMHANS, Bengaluru, had the highest number of publications. The journal with the highest number of publications was the Asian Journal of Psychiatry, and that with the highest citations was the Journal of Affective disorders. Conclusion: The growth of Indian research in the field of TMS corresponds to that of the global one but also suggests the need for more studies to match the research output from other countries.

RESUMO

Background To analyze the quantity and impact of cardiovascular research done in Africa or coauthored by researchers based in Africa, their determinants, and the patterns of research collaboration. Methods and Results We retrieved data from Web of Science and additional sources. We analyzed temporal trends from 1971 to 2021 and geographical distribution, research impact using country-level h-index, international research cooperation, and associations of research quantity and quality using linear regression. The annual volume of cardiovascular research from Africa has increased from 4 publications in 1971 to 3867 in 2020 and currently represents ~3% of the global cardiovascular research output. Authors from South Africa (28.1%) and Egypt (24.1%) accounted for more than half of all publications from African countries, and they had the highest h-index (209 and 111, respectively). Important collaborators outside Africa included the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Australia. The country's publication count was associated with larger population size (P<0.001), whereas the country's h-index was associated with larger population size (P=0.001) and higher human development index (P=0.023). International collaboration was dominated by the United States, South Africa, United Kingdom, Egypt, and Canada. The level of collaboration between African countries was lower than their collaboration with non-African countries. Conclusions Cardiovascular research output from African authors remains low, despite marked progress over the past 5 decades. These findings highlight the urgent need to improve the quantity and quality of cardiovascular research in Africa through increased investments, training of human resources, improved infrastructures, and expansion of collaborative research networks, particularly within Africa.

RESUMO

(1) Background: The study of the human euphonic voice is a subject that has been researched in recent years from different perspectives. Therefore, it is pertinent to assess the current state of the science. The aim of analyzing the characteristics of normal voice-related publications over the last 11 years is to identify research trends, the numerical and temporal evolution of the publications, their type, and the most-used descriptors. (2) Methods: Bibliometric data from 2011 to 2021 were obtained through several databases. Subsequently, a science mapping analysis was made via VOSviewer software. (3) Results: A total of 901 publications were obtained. The analysis of the scientific production on the field of study regarding the euphonic voice shows a slight increase over the last 11 years, with an average of 82 publications per year. Co-authorship analysis revealed a 6215 authors contributing to the field with a 901 articles (headed by Jiang, J.J. with 18 articles). Keyword co-occurrence analysis highlighted the lack of temporal advancement and variety in the terminology used in the field of voice research. (4) Conclusions: This scientometric study sheds light to the need to broaden in this field of study and the establishment of solid research groups to contribute to its advancement.

RESUMO

Introduction: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is one of the most frequently occurring types of cancer in humans. Scientometric research is an innovative method for analyzing the research trends in various domains, with great implications in the field of medicine. Materials and Methods: We searched the Web of Science database with the following established query terms: "Squamous cell carcinoma", "skin", and "immunohistochemistry". After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 76 articles were selected. The present study aims to analyze, based on the frequency of use of keywords with scientometric algorithms and map-based distributions, the trends of the research concerning cSCCs in 2017-2022. Results: A graphical representation based on 11 scientometric maps presented the division of the keywords into seven clusters, from which seven categories of research interest were defined. The clusters represent a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of cSCCs, cancer diagnostics, patient outcomes, histopathological importance, management of cSCCs, role of progression, and adequate treatment of and importance of immunohistochemistry for cSCCs. The distribution of the citations shows the importance of the available research on cSCCs by analyzing the first five most-cited articles included in our study in direct concordance with the seven defined clusters. Conclusion: The scientometric research method reveals the interest of research in the multidisciplinary approach used to obtain the best outcomes for the patient, including a targeted investigation, as well as diagnostic and treatment options. The trends in the research reveal that histopathological diagnostics and immunohistochemistry, combined with molecular techniques, are the most important tools used to establish a personalized diagnosis, thus increasing the quality of life and life expectancy for patients with cSCCs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 outbreak highlighted the importance of rapid access to research. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate research communication related to COVID-19, the level of openness of papers, and the main topics of research into this disease. METHODS: Open access (OA) uptake (typologies, license use) and the topic evolution of publications were analyzed from the start of the pandemic (January 1, 2020) until the end of a year of widespread lockdown (March 1, 2021). RESULTS: The sample included 95,605 publications; 94.1% were published in an OA form, 44% of which were published as Bronze OA. Among these OA publications, 42% do not have a license, which can limit the number of citations and thus the impact. Using a topic modeling approach, we found that articles in Hybrid and Green OA publications are more focused on patients and their effects, whereas the strategy to combat the pandemic adopted by different countries was the main topic of articles selecting publication via the Gold OA route. CONCLUSIONS: Although OA scientific production has increased, some weaknesses in OA practice, such as lack of licensing or under-researched topics, still hold back its effective use for further research.

RESUMO

Microplastic pollution of our environment has seen major data reporting in the last decade. Microplastics produce harmful effects on marine organisms and in humans. Despite the fact that microplastics (MPs) have inert or sublethal toxicity in many circumstances, their long-term presence can have negative ecological consequences. However, there is a paucity of comprehensive literature on the present study and future development trend of MPs in aquatic ecosystems, to our knowledge. In this scientometric study, the literature was evaluated between years 2011 and 2019. The data show increasing importance of microplastics in terms of increase in publication in concurrence of granting funds in this area by major funding agencies. Most research articles were published by authors (~ 49%) affiliated with Chinese Academy of Sciences. Journals 'Marine Pollution Bulletin' and 'Environmental Pollution' were identified as important journals with 273 and 185 research publications, respectively. We have also identified the upcoming research trend and shift from microplastic presence in water to microplastic presence in air. However, in the year 2017, researchers from the UK started publishing more articles in this field with 11 publications with top authors affiliated to University of Plymouth. The journal Environmental Pollution has been found to be the leading journal (~ 20%) addressing the issue of microplastics in the environment. Our co-authorship analysis demonstrated that China (its institutions and authors) is the most collaborative country followed by the USA, together forming top cluster with a link strength of 42. Finally, our analysis provides information about prospective research and emerging trends that can be explored in the coming years.

RESUMO

Photocatalysis technology is observed to be an effective approach for its outstanding performance to eliminate wide range of organic pollutants including dyes in textile effluent. Despite growing number of studies, there is no scientometric perspective addressing the research topic "photocatalytic degradation of dye effluents". In this regard, a total of 954 documents were extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) database using keywords search to cover all the published documents during the period 1996-2020. Publications in this area started to increase exponentially from year 2007. The most dominant subject categories were Engineering, Chemistry and Environmental Science & Ecology. Applied Catalysis B-Environmental and Desalination & Water Treatment were identified as the most-impactful and productive journals respectively. Authors based in India accounted for 29.6% of total publications followed by China (14.2%); but in terms of citations Spain and Italy were more influential. Based on keyword analysis, azo dyes, TiO2, nanoparticles, adsorption, methylene blue, visible light, ZnO and kinetics are the most studied, and visible light mediated photocatalysis, hybrid treatment systems, nano based photocatalysis and more recently, metal based photocatalysis, have received most attention. Studies on cost and energy analysis, recovery of value-added products, development of more efficient photocatalytic materials and new photocatalyst regeneration approaches should be considered for future research. This study therefore, provides a comprehensive understanding about the trends and patterns of the specified research field worldwide.

RESUMO

Purpose: Active research in arthroscopy in all its domains has been transcending into evidence-backed clinical practice over years. A look-back at the research developments in arthroscopy using scientometry for the past thirty years will help the researchers identify what has been investigated so far, and what needs to be done in the future. Methods: We used the Web of Science-core collection database as the source for data retrieval. We used CiteSpace (5.7.R1) for scientometric and visualization analysis Visualization of the structure, regularity, and distribution of research domains in the arthroscopy was done with the analysis of the article co-citation data to mine the knowledge clustering and citation space distribution. We also analyzed the co-occurrence between the additional research units such as cooperation among authors, institutions, and countries in the field of arthroscopy. Results: We recovered 383 RCTs and 11,853 non-RCT articles in the field of arthroscopy from the global literature of 15,766 arthroscopy-related publications from 1990 to 2019. Research co-operation group with the top contribution to the arthroscopic literature was from BG Domb, MJ Philippon, and SJ Nho for non-RCT articles and Casati A, Pluta A, and Lund B for RCTs. Weaker collaboration exists among the institutions globally, but the network of domestic institutions seemed stronger in co-institution analysis. USA and England have been the pioneers in research particularly the RCTs. The current hotspots were around the outcome analysis, particularly in the knee and shoulder pathologies. In the hip the main area of focus was the Femoro-Acetabular Impingement (FAI). The other areas of arthroscopy remain relatively less explored. Conclusions: Research in arthroscopy is rapidly progressing. Poor international collaboration, the concentration of research only in certain areas of arthroscopy, and conduction of most RCTs only by certain institutes seem to be gross problems in arthroscopic research. Setting up of an International authoritative body for arthroscopic research is the way forward for arthroscopy. RESUMO

Micro RNA (miRNA) research has great implications in uncovering the aetiology of neuropsychiatric conditions due to the role of miRNA in brain development and function. Schizophrenia, a complex yet devastating neuropsychiatric disorder, is one such condition that had been extensively studied in the realm of miRNA. Although a relatively new field of research, this area of study has progressed sufficiently to warrant dozens of reviews summarising findings from past to present. However, as a majority of reviews cannot encapsulate the full body of research, there is still a need to synthesise the diversity of publications made in this area in a systematic but easy-to-understand manner. Therefore, this study adopted bibliometrics and scientometrics, specifically document co-citation analysis (DCA), to review the literature on miRNAs in the context of schizophrenia over the course of history. From a literature search on Scopus, 992 papers were found and analysed with CiteSpace. DCA analysis generated a network of 13 major clusters with different thematic focuses within the subject area. Finally, these clusters are qualitatively discussed. miRNA research has branched into schizophrenia, among other medical and psychiatric conditions, due to previous findings in other forms of non-coding RNA. With the rise of big data, bioinformatics analyses are increasingly common in this field of research. The future of research is projected to rely more heavily on interdisciplinary collaboration. Additionally, it can be expected that there will be more translational studies focusing on the application of these findings to the development of effective treatments.

RESUMO

Almost a century after Jacob Levy Moreno pioneered the group practice of psychodrama, research in this area has flourished to include different sub-fields of study and psychodramatic intervention for various psychological conditions. By making use of scientometric analysis, particularly document citation analysis and keyword analysis, this study maps out dominant research domains in psychodrama since its inception. From these findings, projections of future research trends and an evaluation of psychodrama research are discussed. Generally, there has been an increased adoption of technology to facilitate psychodrama practice, along with an increasing integration of psychodramatic principles with other psychotherapies. To improve research in this area, this paper recommends greater transparency in the reporting of materials, processes and data used in publications. Finally, we encourage embracing new technological methods such as neuroimaging to provide greater insight into mechanisms of change in psychodrama. The field of psychodrama remains full of potential and innovations to be developed.

RESUMO

The growth of industrialization has led to an increase in the production of highly contaminated wastewater. Industrial wastewater contains highly complex compounds varying in characteristics and required to be treated before its discharge into a water medium from various industries. However, the efficiency of the treated wastewater from the toxicity reduction perspective is unclear. In order to overcome this barrier, toxicity assessment of the industrial wastewater before and after treatment is crucial. Thus, in this study, a scientometric analysis has been performed on the toxicity assessment of industrial wastewater and sludges, which have been reported in the literature. Web of Science (WoS) core collection database has been considered the main database to execute this analysis. Via the search of pre-researched keywords, a total number of 1038 documents were collected, which have been published from 1951 to 2020. Via CiteSpace software and WoS analyser, these documents went under analysis regarding some of the scientometry criteria, and the detailed results obtained are provided in this study. The total number of published documents on this topic is relatively low during such a long period of time. In conclusion, the need for more detailed contributions among the scientific and industrial communities has been felt.

RESUMO

Research investigating the neural substrates underpinning parental behaviour has recently gained momentum. Particularly, the hypothalamic medial preoptic area (MPOA) has been identified as a crucial region for parenting. The current study conducted a scientometric analysis of publications from 1 January 1972 to 19 January 2021 using CiteSpace software to determine trends in the scientific literature exploring the relationship between MPOA and parental behaviour. In total, 677 scientific papers were analysed, producing a network of 1509 nodes and 5498 links. Four major clusters were identified: "C-Fos Expression", "Lactating Rat", "Medial Preoptic Area Interaction" and "Parental Behavior". Their content suggests an initial trend in which the properties of the MPOA in response to parental behavior were studied, followed by a growing attention towards the presence of a brain network, including the reward circuits, regulating such behavior. Furthermore, while attention was initially directed uniquely to maternal behavior, it has recently been extended to the understanding of paternal behaviors as well. Finally, although the majority of the studies were conducted on rodents, recent publications broaden the implications of previous documents to human parental behavior, giving insight into the mechanisms underlying postpartum depression. Potential directions in future works were also discussed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the quantity and quality of publications in AF research using large-scale scientometric data analyses. BACKGROUND: Research in atrial fibrillation (AF) has increased over time. The increasing number of research papers makes it harder to identify relevant research work. METHODS: All 21,603 publications from 1945 to 2018 were retrieved from Web of Science and analyzed regarding geographical distribution of scientific output and international research cooperation. RESULTS: The total number of AF publications has significantly increased since the millennium change, from 3,063 (14.2%) in 1945 to 1999 to 18,540 (85.8%) publications in 2000 to 2018. AF research grew 10-fold compared with overall medical research since 1990 (ratio of AF publications to all publications: 0.02% (n = 99 of 410,701) in 1990 vs. 0.2% (n = 1,967 of 1,172,649) in 2018; p < 0.05). Quantitatively, the United States contributed 25.9% of AF research, followed by Japan (8.0%), Germany (7.8%), China (7.3%), and the United Kingdom (5.9%). In the all-time modified h-index, the United States ranked first (13.3% of all nations), followed by Canada (8.5%) and the United Kingdom (6.3%). In relation to population, Denmark was the best-rated nation, with the lowest number of inhabitants per publication (11,457), followed by Sweden (18,426) and the Netherlands (25,749), and per modified h-index (90,746), followed by Sweden (170,602) and the Netherlands (218,203). Measuring publications per research institute, Denmark again ranked first, with 19.2 publications per institute, followed by Italy (14.9) and Sweden (13.8). An intensive cooperation between nations was apparent. CONCLUSIONS: This study showed an increase in publication activity in AF research. The United States was the leading country in quantity of research efforts. Related to population and research institutes, Denmark ranked first.

RESUMO

AIMS: We aimed at developing a structured study protocol utilizing the bibliographic web-application science performance evaluation (SciPE) to perform comprehensive scientometric analyses. METHODS AND RESULTS: Metadata related to publications derived from online databases were processed and visualized by transferring the information to an undirected multipartite graph and distinct partitioned sets of nodes. Also, institution-specific data were normalized and merged allowing precise geocoordinate positioning, to enable heatmapping and valid identification. As a result, verified, processed data regarding articles, institutions, journals, authors gender, nations and subject categories can be obtained. We recommend including the total number of publications, citations, the population, research institutions, gross domestic product, and the country-specific modified Hirsch Index and to form corresponding ratios (e.g., population/publication). Also, our approach includes implementation of bioinformatical methods such as heatmapping based on exact geocoordinates, simple chord diagrams, and the central implementation of specific ratios with plain visualization techniques. CONCLUSION: This protocol allows precise conduction of contemporaneous scientometric analyses based on bioinformatic and meta-analytical techniques, allowing to evaluate and contextualize scientific efforts. Data presentation with the depicted visualization techniques is mandatory for transparent and consistent analyses of research output across different nations and topics. Research performance can then be discussed in a synopsis of all findings.
